Traditionally a Japanese neighborhood, Liberdade has been transformed by the arrival of new immigrants from Korea and China.
The streets here are lined with shops and restaurants selling everything from woks to comic books. When we arrived on a Sunday, there was a lively market in the Praça da Liberdade.
More importantly, the stores here sell Sriracha (aka rooster sauce). That link will take you to the FB fan page. (I am shocked to know that only eleven of my friends ‘like’ this.)
We visited Aska with a group of friends for homemade ramen noodles. Because that’s what people do here on the weekends. They sit for long periods of time, eating & drinking beer with people they love.
My research tells me the hot pink swirl in the middle is called Naruto. As it turns out, this is also the name of a popular comic book series and naruto.com did not clarify anything for me. I still cannot tell you what I ate.
Rua Galvão Bueno includes many of the shops and is decorated with red Japanese arches, called torii.
In his regular husband fashion, the spouse buried his meal in Sriracha hot chili pepper sauce & anything else that looked remotely spicy within proximity. The remainder of his meal was spent savoring the homemade dish swallowing through tears.
*I’ve decided it is in all of our best interests to disperse the Rio posts. More to come…
