“…Sao Paulo’s incredible diversity had quite an impact on how quickly I felt comfortable here. While the initial adaptation may have been tough at times, I never felt like I had to worry about standing out in regards to race and ethnicity (outside of my very American accent that is). Even if you don’t watch the entire video, within the first few minutes you get an idea that the faces of Sao Paulo are very much like those of New York City.  There are immigrants from around the world that call themselves Brazilian and their stories are beautiful. It has fostered immeasurable pride, that I too feel even after only a few years of calling these 18 million people my neighbors.”

“The movie follows the three Villas Boas brothers from a prominent São Paulo family who join an expedition to open Brazil’s wild frontier. They encounter indigenous tribes who previously had no outside contact, and become advocates for protecting these groups. Orlando Villas Boas eventually helped convince the Brazilian government to set up Brazil’s first indigenous reserve, Xingu National Park, which is nearly the size of Belgium. The brothers also helped convince indigenous tribes to settle in the park and to relocate people who were scattered from tribes and other tribes who would be displaced by the Transamazonica highway construction.

I have never met this Jim character, but something tells me we would make the best of friends.  Alas, he resides in Rio and I live in the concrete jungle that is São Paulo.  It is through him and other bloggers that I learn valuable information about living in Brazil.  Such as the following tidbit regarding the carnaval celebration that begins tomorrow.
