After spending many long hours researching our trip to the Amazon, we arrived and immediately scrapped our
original plans. Instead, we went the route less traveled and opted for a local guide that didn’t speak a lick of English.
The major selling point was the following laminated picture that he carried with him:
SOLD. I’m a sucker for quality advertising. His prices were more than reasonable (R$200 = US$100/person)
which included two nights and three days at his home in the environmental reserve of Flona do Tapajós.
We packed lightly: sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, camera, minimal comfortable clothing, walking shoes, hat & raincoat.
(Our only regret was not bringing warmer clothing… it was quite chilly in the hammocks at night!)
Our boat trip took just over three hours. It is possible to find the village by car, but the roads are unmarked and generally made of sand.
Travel by boat is more common and often more reliable.
SO, we spent three hours viewing this…
bate-papo (chit chatting) with fellow travelers & new friends (Franck + Richard & Brett + Giselle)…
on our primary mode of transportation…
stopping at empty, unnamed beaches for a dip…
spending quality time with the sister…
watching the locals wash their motorcycles in the Tapajós River…
and fishing with nets attached to soda bottles…
all the while we relaxed and enjoyed the stunning scenery…
Here we are arriving at Bata’s home. During the wet season, his driveway is flooded and he pulls in by boat.
When the water recedes, the walk lengthens considerably.
Seeing as I took eight hundred photos while traveling, and my intent is not to inundate you, I am going to break this up a bit…
Upcoming posts will include the community of Jamaraquá, our rainforest home stay with Bata, hiking to Sumauma,
cayman hunting, and swimming in the flooded forest. Prepare yourselves!
